As an auditor, I’m geared to think of risks and ‘What can go wrong’ – which makes it harder for me to take risks. If you’re also a prevention-focused person whose main motivation is preventing losses, sometimes the only way to get closer to what you want is to take the leap of faith and burn the boats. Matt Higgins discussed about this up very well in his book Burn the Boats.

Here are six key takeaways to help you navigate the uncharted waters of entrepreneurship and career growth:

1. Take a leap, even when your instincts tells you to seek safer grounds.
2. There will never be a perfect time to act. Do it now.
3. Don’t wait for external validation or buy-in. If people don’t see the same opportunities as you, trust your vision.
4. Not all opportunities (career or otherwise) will be shaped as a ladder of incremental growth.
5. Embrace fear but don’t let them overwhelm you. Use them as a motivator.
6. When you reach the end of one journey, do it all over again.
